Dealing with severe acne since the age of 16, I’ve found Paula’s Choice to be one of the most effective skincare brands for my skin, alongside Accutane. Accutane, a dermatologist-prescribed treatment for severe acne, comes with a hefty price tag and numerous unpleasant side effects. However, let’s focus on Paula’s Choice for now.

Every Paula’s Choice product I’ve experimented with has proven exceptional, causing no adverse reactions on my highly sensitive skin. As a black woman grappling with super oily skin, even minor pimples leave dark hyperpigmentation—whether or not I succumb to the temptation of picking at them (guilty as charged, but let’s not judge!).

How did I get introduced to Paula’s Choice?

I was browsing through YouTube University, minding my business, and found a video by the amazing Chizi Duru, and this is the link to her YouTube video. Follow and subscribe to her channel.

I followed the exact steps she shared to overcome her acne. After watching her video, I delved into reviews on YouTube University, and there’s a wealth of dermatologists providing insights on these products. It’s crucial to conduct thorough research. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Who/What is Paula’s Choice?

Full disclosure, I’m not familiar with Paula or how long they’ve been in the scene. What’s important for you to know is that, despite this, I’m sharing my thoughts on their products because they’ve proven effective for me. Despite trying prescribed topical creams and antibiotics recommended by my dermatologist and primary care, nothing seemed to work for my acne. In the realm of no-nonsense skincare, Paula’s Choice reigns supreme when it comes to my skincare routine.

Seriously, it’s impossible to scroll through Instagram or TikTok for just five minutes without stumbling upon someone raving about the almost-too-good-to-be-true before-and-after transformations or singing praises for Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid. The exfoliating power of this product has done wonders for smoothing my skin gently over time. I was genuinely taken aback by the results the very next day after using it. I swear on the cheese (as my BFF would say), I could visibly see the difference in my skin texture, and my hyperpigmentation was noticeably fading. Whatever they’re putting in their products, it’s doing the trick.

Before and After

Hey, the brand offers a variety of collections and formulas, so it’s essential to do your homework to find what suits your skin best. A major plus is that everything is cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and non-irritating, all for less than $60. With around 17 different sunscreens (don’t ask me why), there’s plenty to choose from. But, seriously, do your research—I can’t guarantee what works for me will work for you. Also, YouTube is a great starting point for your exploration.

If you’re budget-conscious, The Ordinary has similar products, usually at a more affordable price. Personally, I haven’t tried their products, but they might be worth checking out.

Magic Gold

The Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster, combined with this concentrated 10% niacinamide serum booster, works wonders. It significantly enhances uneven skin tone and refines the appearance of pores, skin texture, and fine lines. This duo has been a game-changer for me!

Discovering that I no longer needed to constantly search for new acne-fighting solutions brought me immense joy. Not being particularly into makeup, living without it and dealing with people staring at my face was challenging. I alternate these products with the BHA liquid gold, using the BHA at night to avoid sun exposure—just remember to apply sunscreen. The compliments from family and friends about my newfound healthy skin are pouring in. This isn’t a secret I plan on keeping; I’ve been enthusiastically recommending this duo to almost everyone who inquires about my skincare routine.

Happy with the progress so far.

The only drawback for my bank account is the ongoing commitment to these products. I noticed that when I stopped using them, the breakouts started creeping back. Now I understand their importance—ha! It might not be great for my bank account, but it’s certainly doing wonders for my skin. I’ve truly found my holy grail. Thanks, everyone!

Within a few weeks, this booster efficiently diminished the pigment from new scarring, a process that typically would have taken me a year or more. While my skin journey clearly has a ways to go, the progress I’ve made is significant. It hasn’t completely vanished, but it has notably reduced the discoloration.

Side Note: I occasionally use the clay mask and a steamer, although not very frequently
