10 Dope Black Designers You Should Know

Fashion Week are upon us, so it’s the perfect time to spotlight on 10 black designers who are making some of the most dynamic and chic clothing, which are leading the style conversation. It is no secret that there is a lack of inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry.

These creators are here to change the game and we are loving it; and there’s no arguing on the impact they’ve had so far and will continue to have. Some like Dumebi Andrea Iyamah, Fanm Mom, IAM Apparel and Stella Jean. They are challenging the norms and using their platforms to bring awareness to the culture and different topics such as mental health and self-love. If you have not supported them yet, this is the perfect time to start.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” —Gianni Versace

Kimberly Goldson

Kimberly Goldson was conceived and launched in 2012 by sisters Kimberly Goldson and Shelly Powell. The Kimberly Goldson lifestyle brand is inspired by the flavor of Kimberly and Shelly’s hometown, Brooklyn, and draws from the dynamic cultures encountered during their international travels. It was created as a mix of those worlds for women who love luxury and dare to be bold and vivacious, fearless, and distinctive.

Dumebi Andrea Iyamah

Andrea Iyamah owned by Nigerian fashion designer Andrea Dumebi Iyamah, is a clothing line strongly inspired by ethnic cultures and elements of nature. Founded in 2011, Andrea Iyamah adopts design elements that stay true to creating authentic clothing and resort wear that celebrate her African roots and cultures beyond. Inspired by travel and nature, the bold colors, modern femininity, retro classic silhouettes, and a contemporary edge appeal to the A.I woman who is an adventurer in spirit, mind, and style.

Operating out of Toronto, Lagos, and New York, the brand caters to females across borders who are confident, adventurous, and unafraid of clothing designed with a statement. Since 2011, the brand has focused on celebrating ethnicity with a modern twist, while maintaining its attention to quality, detail, and figure-flattering silhouettes.
The Andrea Iyamah team works together to ensure that stories are told through every piece created. A.I’s vision is to persistently build and embrace cultural stories through design that celebrate the bold, expressive, and confident woman that is the A.I woman.

Stella Jean

Roman by way of an Italian father with a Haitian mother. I represent an intersecting point between two seemingly opposite cultures. It is a cultural distillate, and a cross-border fertilization project, that I narrate through fashion, which I understand to be a tool and not solely an aesthetic landing point.

Fashion is a powerful international megaphone that allows beauty to make a pathway in the viewer, a pathway that, for me, transforms into a channel of integrationist contamination.

A collection is more than the sum of its garments; clothes can speak louder and in a more incisive manner than many words, somehow managing to ignite cultural fabric. Métissage is the gateway to social development. The meeting of cultures, and the relative inclusiveness, is an irreversible choice to this very day. The point at which we could decide whether or not to deal with others different from us has already passed; the others are already part of us. Stella has something you’re bound to fall in love with.

Virgil Abloh

As the artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear and founder of the Italian based fashion line Off White, the talented Ghanaian-American Virgil Abloh is a big name in the design world. Abloh, who was born in Chicago, launched the luxury streetwear label Off-White in 2013 and currently acts as the brands creative director. Before that, Abloh was known as Kanye West’s creative director. Jay-Z, Beyonce, Asap Rocky and Rihanna are among the many who have rocked the label.

The BFyne experience is meant to leave you inspired and empowered. Audiences will be smitten by your embodiment of uninhibited sex appeal and poise.

Body positivity is a foundational principle at BFyne. You will always see models of varying shapes, sizes and ethnicities strut down the catwalk. This, coupled with stand-out designs, it’s no wonder BFyne shut down Miami Swim Week in July 2019. BFyne has also showcased collections in NY Fashion Week, Cayman Island Fashion Show, and the Elite Fashion Show.

BFyne’s list of patrons remains star-studded with fashion icons such as Beyoncé, Iman, Alicia Keys, Eva Marcille, Taraji P Henson, Jordan Dunn, and Rosci Diaz – to a name a few. You may have even spotted BFyne on the tube. Looks from the brand have been featured in the movie Pacific Rim as well as music videos from Tiwa Savage (often referred to as the Beyoncé of Africa), Grammy-nominated artists Jidenna, Flo Rida, Tinashe, and X-Factor stars Fifth Harmony! The brand boasts of a 400k+ following and articles in fashion publications like Essence, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, the Fader, Allure, Glamour, Popsugar, Huffington Post, CFDA, Sports Illustrated, and many others.

IAM Apparel

A few years back I heard a powerful word regarding how negatively people think of themselves, despite the fact that we are children of God (The great I AM). This particular sermon resonated with me deeply and personally because I have seen struggles with insecurities regarding looks, self-doubt, and worth within myself and others. Upon hearing the sermon, it became more apparent that this method of thinking was not limited to myself alone but an ongoing trend amongst many believers and nonbelievers alike.

Disappointed and desperate to change the narrative, I referred back to the sermons’ appeal for inspiration on how to continuously elevate and renew our minds. “How can WE, creations of God, continuously believe we are less than when God Himself created us in His image? If created in His likeness are we not more than we allow the enemy to make us believe?” God is so powerful, so amazing, so beyond any and everything that we can imagine that He is simply referred to as I AM. Created in His image and inheritors of His fortune (The Kingdom), we too can proclaim that I AM for He has purposely and intentionally embedded in our DNA, similar to the uniqueness of a fingerprint, undeniable POSITIVE attributes within us ALL.
